KAREN SEWELL
FANTASY ISLAND

Soft sentinel faux fur palm trees stand in a mirrored pond and faux fur covered animal characters come together with tropical plants and flowers. Fantasy Island is an artwork to walk in, sit in, play in, contemplate in, and make things in! It is both a parody and an island of hope. As an artist, Karen Sewell is interested in all things that promote the blossoming of life, both for
people and our planet.

This installation addresses specific forces of power and control pervasive in our contemporary society, including consumer culture and materialism, which entice with empty promises of the "good life". These things are promoted as the answer to personal happiness, value and fulfillment. This work offers an invitation to rest and play and contemplate, to resist being co-opted by the empire and the courage to step out from it and experience counter-imperial alternatives filled with hope.
