JOE KEMP: TANGATA WHETU
Bay Of Plenty artist Joe Kemp originally hails from Christchurch and is of Ngai Tahu, Ngapuhi and Te Arawa (Ngati Makino) descent. He is a self taught artist who has been sculpting for over 15 years. His preferred medium is native timbers but also carves New Zealand stone from Oamaru and Hinuera.
Joe feels a spiritual connection between himself and the material he works and holds a responsibility to reveal the wairua within each piece..
His works are represented in many national and international collections.
Tangata Whetu depicts old knowledge from the stars our ancestors used in the great migration from Hawaiki to Aotearoa, with the Kaitiaki Tohora (guardian whale) over the voyage.
