Dont be a Waster - Sort your Trash Out

Splore 2008 is intensifying its energy towards REDUCING its WASTE going to the landfill.  Landfills are horrid, having the ability to pollute water and soils with lechates and the air with methane.  Every Splorer is asked,  ever so politely,  to participate with the utmost enthusiasm in achieving this.
Around 64% of waste was recycled in 2006 and we are wanting to beat this.

Here are a few tips to help achieve the goal.

ATTITUDE
Please all Splorers RESPECT the ENVIRONMENT.  New Zealand is a beautiful country and Splorers are beautiful people and working together we can minimise our environmental impact.

AVOID WASTE
When buying goods to bring to Splore, NOTICE its PACKAGING and select it  because it has no or little packaging.

PLAN YOUR NEEDS before coming and only bring what you know you will definitely use.

REDUCING WASTE
BE CONTAINER CONSCIENOUS – Store your food in reusable containers – you know… tuppaware, click clacks & ice cream containers.  This will create less food contamination, greater freshness and less waste to manage while  staying at Splore.  Using containers will also allow you to lift the lid and pass food around for a quick graze.
Organic waste is the one the nastiest wastes to enter landfill and takes up the largest volume of landfill space.  When it decomposes it is the main contributo to the leachates and gases.  So please REDUCE ORGANIC WASTE and try to eat all on your plate.

REUSE
Explore the notion of using packaging twice.  Its as easy as refilling  bottles or  taking the container home again to use another day.

RECYCLING
There will be approximately 20 RECYCLING STATIONS.  Bins will be stationed for clear glass, green glass, plastics, paper and organics. It will be user friendly and CLEARLY IDENTIFIED.

TRASH PALACE  is where we will be managing the waste  that you have correctly sorted, and will be centrally located by the camping ground and on route to the main area.

Splore in its dedication to minimizing waste to landfill has asked all FOOD VENDORS to USE POTATO PLATES, KNIVES AND FORKS.  These things you can eat if you are extra hungry or if you just want the food on them they break down in a composting situation and we will be ensuring that’s how they end up. For more info on the plates and utensils go to http://www.potatoplates.com/.

The Splore Waste Team will be working hard and are constantly refining systems to ensure success for our reduction of waste to landfill goal.

We look forward to seeing and working with you.
